ADVANCE: Adria Velocity and Neotectonic Collision with Eurasia

Objectives:

1) Test existing models for quasi-periodic transient deformation in the convergent margin setting using southern Dalmatia as a natural laboratory. We will apply a rich data set including detailed continuous GPS measurements of crustal deformation, seismicity patterns, tide and atmospheric pressure gauge anomalies, published laboratory-based experiments, and field-based structural geology.

2) Establish the Neogene to present kinematic history of the Adria microplate through multidisciplinary research in the Dinaric orogen on its eastern margin. We will illuminate the nature of the processes through which lithosphere is fragmented and ultimately consumed or entrained during the closure of oceanic basins between converging continental plates.
